The Road

I thought you'd appreciate a few views of the road we are travelling here. It is all graded wide and as smooth as possible. The traffic, especially the large trucks for mining traffic, generate the corrugations. This means that it is graded once or twice a year to knock this down a bit. But the bumps remain.

In most places the dirt is red. Lots of iron compounds here. When you view the area in Google maps satellite view, you can really see just how red it is over such a huge area.

But there are sections where the road lightens and has whiter sand mixed in. here, we see a section that, by comparison, is nearly white.

And, on those rare occasions when you meet oncoming traffic, you can easily see them coming but watching the arrival of the associated dust cloud.

This is truly a vast and beautiful place that stretches to the horizon and beyond in every direction. As the image below suggests, there is an endlessness to this place that sinks into you. Even though we were only on this section of the road for three days, we came to feel that we'd been here much longer and it would likely never end. But it did.
