Sunrise at Kata Tjuta

We awoke with the stars still shining brightly overhead. At this time of day and in this season, Orion was about a third of the way up in the sky. We put on yesterday's clothes, grabbed some yogurt and hit the road. In about 50 minutes, we reached the sunrise lookout for Kata Tjuta. This is a metal platform getting us up above the surrounding vegetation.

Of the 24 images I made leading up to sunrise and beyond, these two were the best ones. We are far enough from the rock and they are so spread out that it didn't seem like a longer focal length would really get us enough of anything to make it better.

Once the sun was up, I turned about and had a look towards Uluru. It is some distance away (40-50 km) but is still imposing in the morning sun.

There are hiking trails among the huge boulders that form Kata Tjuta. One of these trails is called the Valley of the Winds. the road leading to this trail took us past a break in the rocks where I could align with the sin and the nearest boulder to get this shot.

Although the sunrise was not terribly dramatic, the sun filtering among the rocks certainly was.
