Hall's Gap

Alongside the road we found a lizard. He seems to be a young bearded dragon of some sort (probably an Inland Bearded Dragon such as we have seen before).

The business of stopping to photograph this fellow turned out to be a bit of an adventure. E pulled off the side of the road to let what little traffic there was (actually there wasn't any at all) pass by. Turns out that the roadside was really soft mud and we quickly sank to within a couple inches of having the frame on the ground.

So I fetched the trusty camping shovel we purchased last July for just this situation and started digging. After a few minutes and shift into 4wd-low, we back on the hard surface of the road with all four wheels. Nothing muddy but the shovel and my hands.

Halls Gap is a small place built for tourism: lots of cafes, ice cream, and gift shops. We visited an aboriginal culture center there and learned about Bunjil and the people that have always lived here.

In front of the culture center, we saw a red wattlebird posing in a tree nearby.

But the real star of the area are the imposing cliffs of the Grampian Mountains.

The spirit animal for this area is the cockatoo and we saw plenty of them. You can even see them in the sky in the picture below.

This is a beautiful place. On your next visit to Australia, you need to stop by.
